Historic Burroughs Home

Originally built in 1901, Burroughs Home & Gardens remains one of the first Georgian revival style homes still standing in Fort Myers. It was previously occupied by the Burroughs family and still features most of their original furnishings, including twinkling chandeliers, handcrafted furniture, and more. Having hosted numerous notable guests over the years, including Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, it is now featured on the National Register of Historic Places. Fort Myers (or Ft. Myers) is a city in and the county seat and commercial center of Lee County, Florida, United States.

On the second floor landing there is an interesting display of correspondence between Edison and Ford where Edison blamed the cigarette paper, rather than the tobacco, for causing health issues. There’s also an exhibit showcasing Charles Lindberg’s first Trans-Atlantic flight from New York to Paris in 1927. It is in the Georgian Revival style and was built in 1901 for John T. It was abandoned in 1858, at the end of the Third Seminole War. During the Second Seminole War, between 1835 and 1842, the U.S. Army operated Fort Dulaney at Punta Rassa, at the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River.

In 1908, the Arcade Theater was constructed in Downtown Fort Myers. Originally a vaudeville house, Edison viewed films here for the first time with friends Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone. With the growth of the film industry, the Arcade Theatre was converted into a full movie house. A wall divided the stage in order to form two screening rooms. Changes in moviegoing habits since the late 20th century have led to the renovation of the theater for use again in live performance.

The gardens were landscaped and used to host spectacular parties for similarly wealthy families including the Firestones, Fords, and Edisons. Burroughs Home & Gardens was built in 1901 and remains one of the first Georgian revival style homes in Fort Myers.
